How To Overcome Limiting Beliefs - The Identity First Method

October 25, 2026•12 min read

You've read the books. You've written affirmations on sticky notes. You've journaled about the same fear again and again. Still, whether it's time to raise your hand at work, ask for more in your relationship, try a new creative passion, or start taking better care of your body, something inside you whispers, not you, not yet. Who do you think you are? If you've ever thought, I'm just not good at relationships, I'll never be healthy, or People like me can't be creative, you're not alone. If you've been searching for how to overcome limiting beliefs, here's the truth most advice misses: you can't out-think a belief your identity is still protecting. Limiting beliefs don't live in your thoughts; they live in yourself-image. Until your identity shifts, the belief will keep coming back.

This is a different approach. Instead of starting with mindset, you start with identity.

What Are Limiting Beliefs, Really?

A limiting belief is a conclusion you have made about yourself, other people, or life that now quietly sets the ceiling on what you allow yourself to have, do, or become.

I'm not the kind of person who…People like me don't get to…If I'm too visible, something bad will happen.I always mess things up right before they get good.

Most of these weren't chosen consciously. They wereinstalled. Many took root in childhood, when your brain absorbed the world like a sponge and made meaning of everything: how love was given or withheld, what got praised, what got punished, what seemed safe. Your young mind didn't have the capacity to question those conclusions. It simply filed them as fact.

Here's where research meets the soul. Your brain is a prediction machine. It uses experience to forecast what will happen next and to keep you safe. And there's a filter in your brain, the reticular activating system, that helps decide what you notice. It tends to surface evidence that confirms what you already believe and tune out what doesn't. So a belief like"I'm not good enough"doesn't just sit there. It actively scans for proof.

That's why limiting beliefs feel sotrue. You've been collecting evidence for years.

Why Positive Thinking Alone Doesn't Make Them Disappear

If you've ever stood in the mirror saying"I am wealthy, I am worthy, I am self-assured"while your whole body cringed, you already know this part.

Mindset work is important. But if you try to add a new thought on top of an old identity, your nervous system senses a big threat. The statement feels untrue, so your system pushes it away. You might even feel worse, like affirmations don't work for you.

I call this the Identity Gap. It's the space between who you think you are now and who you really are. When this gap is wide, forcing a new belief creates tension inside. Your old identity resists. You hit the same wall, and the limiting belief grows stronger because it finds more proof.

So the real question isn't "How do I think differently?" It's"Who would I have to become for this new belief to feel natural?"

That's the question the Identity-First Method is built on.

What Is the Identity-First Method?

Most approaches to overcoming limiting beliefs work from the outside in: change the thought, hope the feeling follows, hope the behavior follows after that.

The Identity-First Method works from the inside out. It recognizes that beliefs, emotions, and behaviors all flow downstream from identity. When you shift how you see yourself at the root, the belief loosens on its own, because it no longer has an identity to protect.

This works because of neuroplasticity, which means your brain can form new pathways throughout your life. There's a saying in neuroscience:neurons that fire together wire together. Each time you repeat an old pattern, you strengthen it. But every time you choose, feel, or act from a new identity, even in a small way, you start building it.

Changing your identity doesn't happen in one big moment. It's a series of small choices that show who you're becoming. This is when micro habits become more than productivity tricks-they become a way to practice who you want to be.

Suppose you want to go deeper into how the subconscious stores these patterns in the first place; read my guide on rewiring your subconscious mind. It matches beautifully with what we're doing here.

How to Overcome Limiting Beliefs With the F.R.E.E.D. Method

The F.R.E.E.D. Method is the five-stage identity transformation framework at the heart of my work and my book,The Human Experience Owner's Manual. Here's how to overcome limiting beliefs by moving through each stage.

1. Face It: Name the Pattern

You can't release what you refuse to see. The first step is awareness: Catching the belief in action instead of living inside it.

Complete this sentence:"I noticed I …"

I noticed I stopped myself from sending the email.I noticed I downplayed my work when someone complimented me.I noticed I assumed they'd say no before I asked.

Facing it isn't about judgment. It's about separatingyoufrom the pattern. The moment you can observe the belief, you are no longer the belief. You are the one witnessing it.

2. Release It: Let Your Body Let Go

Limiting beliefs aren't only mental. They're stored in your body as tension, contraction, and that familiar tightening in your chest or stomach. Release is where you tell your nervous system it's safe to let go.

Try this - breathe in for 4 counts, then exhale for 8. A longer exhale signals to your body to shift out of fight-or-flight mode and into a calmer state. Repeat several times while holding the belief in your awareness, and gently ask yourself:When did I first learn this? Whose voice is this? Also, acknowledge where you feel it in your body.

Often you'll find the belief wasn't yours to begin with. You inherited it, absorbed it, or adopted it to survive. It was formed, not fated. And what was learned can be unlearned.

3. Embody It: Speak From the New Identity

Now you introduce the identity you're entering. Not as a wish, but as a declaration:"I am …"

I am someone who takes up space.I am worthy of being paid well for my gifts.I am safe to be seen.

If the full statement feels too far away, start where your nervous system can follow you:"I am learning to…"or"I am becoming…"This is how you close the Identity Gap gently, without triggering the old self's alarm system.

Embodiment means feeling it. Stand the way she stands. Breathe the way she breathes and let your body rehearse the identity before your circumstances confirm it or the outer world tells you otherwise.

4. Expand It: Take One Brave Minor Act

This is where identity becomes evidence. Choose one brave minor act (it doesn’t have to be grand), an act the old you wouldn't think about doing, but the new you would do.

Send the pitch. Post the video. Say the price out loud without apologizing. Ask for help.

Keep it small enough to actually get it done. You're not trying to prove it all at once. You're giving your brain one new data point that contradicts the old belief. Stack enough of those new data points, and your reticular activating system starts looking for a new kind of proof.

5. Direct It: Choose It on Purpose

The old belief will come back to test you. That is not failure. That's the realignment process, and directing It is how you stay the course.

Each morning, set your intention:"Today, I choose …, no matter what shows up to test it."

Today, I choose to trust myself, no matter what shows up to test it.

This is identity-level leadership of your own life. You stop waiting for the belief to disappear before you act. You act from who you're becoming, and the belief eventually loses its grip.

How Long Does It Take to Overcome a Limiting Belief?

I wish I could give you a number. The honest answer is that it depends on how deep the belief runs, how long you've been strengthening it, and how consistently you practice the new identity.

Here's what I can tell you. You'll likely notice the first shift quickly, often within days of practicing the Face It. Awareness alone changes the game, because you stop being blindsided by the patterns.

Changing your beliefs at a deeper level takes practice. You're creating a new pathway in your brain, and the old one won't disappear right away. Some days, the old belief will feel strong. That doesn't mean you're starting over. It means you can notice the old voice now, which you couldn't do before.

When things slow down, or you feel stuck, stop and go back to the basics. Name what you’re feeling, allow your body to release the tension, and remember that setbacks are still part of the process. If a belief feels like too much, take smaller steps and come back to the gentle. Celebrate all awareness, even the smallest amounts. Remember, ups and downs are normal. What matters is getting back to your practice, one gentle action at a time.

Progress in identity work is seldom a straight line. It's more like a spiral, with the same themes returning, but each time they feel lighter and don't last as long. Be patient with yourself as you grow.

My Story: The Belief That Almost Kept Me Small

There was a time in my life when I had to rebuild almost everything from scratch. I lost my career, my identity, and the self-worth I had worked so hard to gain. On the outside, I seemed fine. But inside, a belief was controlling everything, one I didn't even realize I had:"I'm not the kind of woman who gets to have it all."

That belief appeared in every part of my life. At work, I found myself shrinking to fit in within the male-dominated real estate industry. I kept telling myself I just needed more discipline, more confidence, or a better plan. I read everything and did all the affirmations, but I always ended up in the same place.

My turning point happened when I found myself on the bathroom floor, feeling empty, depressed, and ashamed. For the first time, I knew in that moment it was time to confront the belief. I realized it wasn't true, just a story I picked up in childhood and made it my truth.

It wasn't forcing positive thinking on myself that changed everything. I started to ask myself deeper questions. Who am I ? Who is the woman I'm becoming? What would she think of herself? I started practicing this new version of myself in little ways. I kept the promises I made to myself. But most importantly, I started to develop a healthier relationship with myself, from the inside out. The old voice was loud some days, but every little choice was a vote for the new me.

By building from the inside out, I gave myself a solid foundation and inner strength. This strength lets me claim all the good things in life before the outside world says it's okay. That journey became the basis for the F.R.E.E.D. Method andThe Human Experience Owner's Manual. I didn't just create this method in theory; I lived it first.

If you're reading this and thinking,"But my belief is different, mine is too deep,"I understand. I used to think the same way. But I'm here to tell you: if it was formed, it can be changed. And if you ever find that your beliefs feel too overwhelming to shift on your own, it is more than okay to ask for help. Contacting a coach or therapist for support is a powerful step and nothing to be ashamed of. Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is let someone walk alongside us.

Your Actionable Takeaway: The 5-Minute F.R.E.E.D. Reset

Knowing how to overcome limiting beliefs means nothing until you practice it. So here's your starting point. Choose one limiting belief that's been loudest lately, and give it five minutes today:

  1. Face It:Write"I noticed I …"and describe exactly where the belief showed up in your life this week.

  2. Release It:Take in five rounds of breath: inhale for 4, exhale for 8. Ask,"Whose voice is this?"

  3. Embody It:Write one"I am …"(or"I am becoming …") statement that names the identity you're entering. Say it out loud.

  4. Expand It:Choose one brave minor act you'll take in the next 24 hours. Make it small enough that you'll actually do it.

  5. Direct It:Close with"Today, I choose …, no matter what shows up to test it."

Do this daily for the next seven days with the same belief. Notice what shifts, not just in your thoughts, but in what you allow yourself to do. That's identity-level change in motion.

After seven days, choose to build on your progress by continuing to strengthen your practice with the same one if it still feels present. You can also revisit the F.R.E.E.D. methodology steps whenever you notice an old pattern resurfacing. Over time, this practice becomes part of your daily routine, helping you strengthen your new identity and keep making gentle, powerful changes one day at a time.
